SHAW'S SUNSHINE GARDENS... the daylilies of Charlie Shaw

Breaking News - Must Read

April 6, 2026

We started Shaw’s Sunshine Gardens in June of 2002 after retuning “home” on April 27, 2002.  When we did so, it was so that I could be around for my mother.  We never really did it to get rich; we honestly felt that it was the right thing to do.  Truthfully, Debra and I felt that was God’s will for us in that season of our lives.  We continued to add to and build the gardens as time progressed.  In June of 2004 we actually played host and hostess for AHS Region 5’s Spring Regional Garden tour.  We were one of several gardens on tour here in the Augusta area. I still recall Stan Woo, who sadly is no longer with us, telling me that I certainly knew how to grow daylilies.  He really reinforced my sense of humble pride over what the gardens had become in a relatively short period of time.  As Debra and I traveled around the country looking at other gardens, I found myself always comparing them to our gardens.  On occasion I would find myself questioning the appearance of a garden compared to ours.  I would never say anything to anyone but Debra.  On April 27, 2012, 10 years to the day of our return home, my mother, Jane was promoted to heaven.  We were here for her and neither Debra or I have any regrets about that. We actually praise God for giving us the honor and privilege of being here for her.  Fast forward through time to now, April 2026 (when this was originally written).  Our gardens are now gardens that I would certainly have questioned, “why would anyone want to visit here”.  I will be 70 years old in just a little over a month and I simply cannot do what I once could.  Finding reliable help simply doesn’t seem possible.  We certainly have never gotten rich in the process of growing and selling daylilies.  Quite to the contrary we have actually lost well in excess of $200,000 since we started the creature that we know as Shaw’s Sunshine Gardens.  We will bring this chapter of our lives to an end this year.  I am still not sure how I’m going to do that.  We will still be open by appointment only until we “close”.  Remember, I’ve already warned you that we are now a garden that nobody would really want to visit.  We will fulfill the orders that we have for this year.  We will even accept new orders that we can fill.  We will only fill them if I can send a plant that I would like to receive.  We are very thankful for the customers and friends that we have met along the way.  May God bless you all as the future unfolds.
